Join Sustainable Coastlines for the Great Coromandel Coastal Clean-up, Saturday 10 March

Due to a decidedly shocking weather forecast for Saturday 3 March, we’ve made the call to postpone the Great Coromandel Coastal Clean-up by one week, to Saturday 10 March. Aside from the date change, all event plans remain the same.

We are looking for volunteers for this massive community coastal clean-up on beaches around the Coromandel Peninsula. On Saturday 10 March, volunteers and boat-owners are invited to join the effort to help remove litter from our coastlines. With hundreds of school students and volunteers confirmed already, this is going to be a huge event.

To get involved, simply turn up at one of our five clean-up locations between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 10 March. Clean-ups will be based at the Long Bay Boat Ramp in Coromandel, the Kuranui Bay Reserve in Thames, outside the Whangamata and Pauanui Surf Life Saving Clubs, and at the Whitianga Wharf. Just sign-in with our team, get your clean-up equipment (all provided for free), and hit the beaches en masse to give back to our beautiful coastlines. Volunteers in Coromandel Town are invited to camp overnight in the native bush-clad Tucks Bay, with a big BBQ celebration planned there on Saturday evening. You don't have to stay at Tucks Bay to be a part of the clean-up event (although it will get you a whole lot closer to the fun!): cabins and caravans are available at Long Bay Motor Camp and you can find other nearby accommodation options here.

Thanks to the generous support of Smart Environmental, Thames Coromandel District Council, Club Marine Insurance and Burnsco Marine and Leisure, this year we are extending the event to both sides of the Peninsula. 

Boats are particularly useful for this activity so if you want the perfect excuse to launch your craft – however big or small – please contact marine operations manager Sam Judd on sam@sustainablecoastlines.org or 021 058 9349. Reef Shipping has kindly offered to supply free fuel for boats if you register early.

Camping for volunteers

Event participants are invited to stay on both the Friday and Saturday nights at our volunteer campground at Tucks Bay, part of the stunning Long Bay Motor Camp just north of Coromandel Town. This secluded bay, surrounded by native bush, will be ours for the weekend and will also be the venue for a post-event barbecue and celebration on Saturday evening after the clean-up.

Book-in your spot online and camping is available for just $10 + BF per person, per night (usually $19). Select from the options above to book-in your spot at the Tucks Bay volunteer campground now. Bookings are available for Friday 9 March, Saturday 10 March, or both nights. Spaces are limited and it’s first-in, first-served, so get in quick!

From the office at Long Bay Motor Camp, Tucks Bay is a two-minute drive over the gravel road or a 5-10 minute walk around the coastal path. Tucks Bay has running water and composting toilets and while we will have a generator for some lighting, there is no power available there, so please bring a torch! Kitchen, toilet and shower blocks – as well as the public boat ramp – are located back in Long Bay where there is power. Bring 50 cent coins for hot showers. Check out a map of Tucks Bay here.
